Omiino herald a new Era for Virtual ASSP solutions

Belfast, 2nd September 2008...  Omiino Ltd have heralded a new era for virtual ASSPs, with the launch of a range of unique Products that delivers highly efficient solutions for specific packet optical network (P-OTN) transport applications, whether PDH or NG-SDH, Ethernet or OTN, 2MBit to 40GBits or beyond.

So what is a "Virtual ASSP"? In essence, it's an 'FPGA based Standard Product' that combines the cost, feature and performance benefits of a traditional ASSP solution with the field programmability and rapid development times associated with an FPGA. 

Mark Carson, Omiino's chief technologist commented, "To date FPGA based product adoption has been constrained by relatively high pricing and limited feature sets, offering little advantage over traditional ASSPs. Omiino have worked hard to develop and deliver virtual ASSP solutions that redefine the price, performance, support and availability of this technology in the telecommunications market", he continued, "our development strategy is based on three pillars, defined by listening to our customers and their challenges, to control costs while delivering solutions which can adapt to a constantly changing market and at the same time respond very rapidly to specific customer demands".

Today's telecommunications networks interconnect the world in ways barely conceivable only five years ago.   People interact daily using instant messaging, Bebo and Facebook; play and live alternate existences in multi-billion dollar virtual spaces and shop globally with single clicks.  Businesses, large and small, are globally connected as never before, benefiting from low-cost VoIP and VPNs.  Driven by customer demand, this pace of change will continue unabated; services unimaginable today will become common place five years from now, in Omiino's view, making the field programmability aspects of the virtual ASSP solution indispensible.

Nowhere in the network are these challenges more acutely felt than in the Optical Transport Network, the fibre web that interconnects the entire telecommunications infrastructure is evolving in technology (from circuit to packet), in capacity (from megabits to gigabits) and in scale (with fibre deployment extending daily).

Omiino's philosophy is to deliver economically viable legacy migration to service providers through maximum leverage of legacy networks in tandem with cost reduction through solutions and support tools that accelerate time-to-market and products that can adjust easily to changing demands.
 
According to Gary Hamilton, chief executive officer, Omiino have developed a unique product that intrinsically addresses the challenges ahead for OTN; "our Virtual ASSP resolves these, usually conflicting, design criteria delivering an inimitable solution that will enable telecommunications providers to exceed both customer and shareholder expectations, by delivering significantly lower solution costs in much faster development times".
